Dilution or Experience
When it comes to raising money, you need to decide what to optimise for.
Do you only care about minimising your equity dilution (in which case, new unestablished funds are ideal) or would you rather raise capital from more experienced VCs? The trade-off here is that VCs who know they can add a lot of value to your start-up will justifiably ask for more equity.
How big is their fund?
Not all VC funds are able to invest beyond your Series A round. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It means that you have to convince new VC funds to join your future rounds. At the same time, if a VC fund has capacity to invest in your Series B and chooses not to, this can be a red flag to potential future investors. They might view this as a signal that your start-up is not a suitable venture investment.
Do they have your back?
Some investors double down on their winners and ignore their more troubled investments. Do you know that your VC partner is the right fit for you? Research their relationships with current and past investments, both successful and unsuccessful.
Who are their investors?
Do you know who ultimately gets rich if you succeed? Some founders might hold different ethical beliefs from the Limited Partners that have provided capital to a VC fund (i.e. certain sovereign wealth funds).
